Hún er með MA frá Akademin Valand í Gautaborg, þaðan sem hún lauk námi 2019. Áður nam hún við myndlist með áherslu á ljósmyndun við Glasgow School of Art. Verk hennar hafa farið víða og verið sýnd meðal annars í The Photographer’s Gallery í London, Hasselblad Center í Gautaborg, í Listasafninu á Akureyri, Listasafni Færeyja, Listasafni Reykjavíkur, Listasafni Íslands og Fotografisk Center í Kaupmannahöfn. Nýjasta ljósmyndabók Hallgerðar, dauðadjúpar sprungur, kom út í lok árs 2024 hjá Blackbook Publishing í Gautaborg. Árið 2018 gaf Pastel ritröð út ljóð-myndabókina Límkennda daga og ljósmyndabókin Hvassast var hópfjármögnuð og útgefin af listamanninum 2016. /// Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir was born 1984 in Reykjavik and is currently living and working in Reykjavik. She graduated as a Master of Fine Arts from Valand Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2019. Previously she studied her BA in Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of Art. Eiginhandarrit Hallgríms Péturssonar að Passíusálmunum er varðveitt í Þjóðarbókhlöðunni og er á heimsminjaskrá UNESCO. Hallgrímskirkja er reist til minningar um Hallgrím. // Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) is Iceland’s most renowned devotional poet, who also composed many secular verses and poems. He is best known for his Hymns of the Passion which have been published more often than any other Icelandic book – and translated into many languages. Hallgrímur Pétursson’s autograph manuscript of the Hymns of the Passion is in the keeping of the National Library of Iceland, and it is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At every stage in this process, the production of the image can take a whole, new turn – there is no correct way of creating a photograph.Hallgerður’s work is a continuation of avant-garde explorations that span a century. Sometimes she refers back to that history, though most often she goes her own way. We might see her work as conceptual art but whereas the conceptual artists of the 1960s and 70s saw photographs primarily as a record of what they were doing in front of the lens, Hallgerður dives in The images exhibited in the café capture the view from Gryfjan showing Freyjugata as it appears in the Icelandic June light, created by turning the room into a camera obscura. Simultaneously the room is transformed into a darkroom, the images processed inside the camera. The visual language emerging from it is soft and abstract, allowing a glimpse into the world of what photography is and where it comes from. Revisiting the main elements of the medium, by building our own room-sized camera we have been drawing with the light as its rays enter the darkened room through a small hole for a specific amount of time. The paper, embedded with silver halides, captures inverted morsels of light, allowing us to see the world outside more intensely as it silently falls on the white wall of the room. Hið sjónræna tungumál sem sprettur úr vinnuferlinu er mjúkt og abstrakt og veitir innsýn í heim ljósmyndunar og hvaðan hún kemur.Með því að umbreyta herbergi í myndavél í yfirstærð leitum við aftur í grunnþætti miðilsins, teiknum með ljósi sem fellur inn í myrkvað herbergið í gegnum lítið gat í vissan tíma. Pappírinn, þakinn lagi af silfursöltum, fangar ljósagnirnar í negatífri mynd og gerir okkur kleift að sjá heiminn fyrir utan nánar er hann fellur hljóðlaust á hvítan vegg herbergisins. Verkið Afurð er samansafn hugleiðinga um hlutverk og merkingu íslenskra landslagsljósmynda, hvernig þær eru notaðar sem uppfylliefni, fegrun á umhverfi okkar, merkjun á landi og þjóð út á við, á íslenskar og erlendar vörur, rannsóknarskýrslur, skjámyndir og fleira. Hvaða þátt eiga landslagsljósmyndir í að skapa sjálfsmynd þjóðar í samtímanum og getur verið að við færumst nær og nær því sem þær segja að við séum, í gegn um einhverskonar kannibalisma klisjanna? Verkið Afurð sem unnið var í maí, júní og júlí var sýnt í Sláturhúsinu á Egilsstöðum á vegum Menningarmiðstöð Fljótsdalshéraðs. Sýningin sem opnaði 18. júlí bar heitið LAND og var samsýning sex myndlistamanna sem öll eiga það sameiginlegt að vinna með ljósmyndina sem miðil og landið sem innblástur. Hinir listamennirnir voru Daníel Magnússon, Guðmundur Ingólfsson, Katrín Elvarsdóttir, Vigfús Birgisson og Þórdís Jóhannesdóttir. Ég hef líka verið að hugsa um viðfangið, músuna, hvernig það sé fangað, afritað og kjarni þess túlkaður í mynd. Einnig hefur viðtakandinn verið mér hugleikinn, skynfæri mannsins og myndlestur. Hvar liggja takmörk kópíunnar, hvað týnist og skapast í þessari þýðingu á hlut úr einu efni í annað? In this album there are images captured somewhere in Turkey and Iceland. Using both my own technique and that of others, unlearning the learnt and exploring vernacular bliss. What remains is a collection of mundane moments accumulated on the way. The space in between parts is there for the imagination to color in. Það er sagt að Ararat-fjall sé að eilífu brúður, ætíð klædd í hvítt.Þessum myndum var safnað einhverstaðar á Íslandi og í Tyrklandi, tilraunakenndu flandri í leit að einhverju sem ekki er hægt að finna.
